Some states write marijuana into the statute, Michigan writes marihuana, others write cannabis, and operators use all three. Whatever your license says, this is where to find the bond and get it issued. ## Marijuana bond or cannabis bond: the same thing The plant is Cannabis sativa L. Older statutes and everyday speech call it marijuana, and Michigan law spells it marihuana. Newer statutes and most regulators now say cannabis: the Department of Cannabis Control in California, the Cannabis Control Commission in Massachusetts, the Division of Cannabis Control in Ohio. None of that changes the bond. A marijuana license bond, a marijuana surety bond, a cannabis license bond and a cannabis surety bond are one instrument with one application and one underwriting process. The obligee is the agency, county or city that requires the bond. The surety is the insurance company that issues it. The bond is not insurance for you. It protects the government and the public, and if the surety pays a claim it recovers the money from the business and the owners who signed the indemnity agreement. The bond guarantees that the business will follow the marijuana laws, pay its marijuana taxes or clean up and close its site properly, depending on the jurisdiction. It is the same thing as a cannabis surety bond. **Q: How much does a marijuana bond cost?** You pay a premium, not the bond amount. The premium is a small fraction of the bond amount. Small marijuana license bonds from $5,000 to $25,000 carry low fixed annual premiums. Larger bonds are rated on credit and financial strength.
